Coffee Made From Mushrooms

Coffee made from mushrooms is made from mushrooms instead of beans. Mushrooms like chaga, turkey tail and reishi have known health benefits such as boosting the immune system, helping the body to manage stress and improving gut health. They also offer a range of other benefits, such as antioxidants and polyphenols, which are compounds that help lower inflammation in the body.1

To make mushroom coffee, mushrooms (not portobello or cremini mushrooms) are dried and ground to a fine powder. Then they are mixed with coffee grounds, or in some cases, instant coffee packets. The result is a beverage that looks and tastes just like regular coffee, with a nutty flavor and earthy aroma. The blend of mushrooms varies by product, but is often a mix of adaptogenic mushroom species like chaga, lion’s mane, turkey tail, reishi and cordyceps.

Coffee Made from Mushrooms: How It’s Changing the Game

Mushroom coffee may not be for everyone, especially people with a sensitivity to mushrooms, allergies or digestive and heart problems. It is also high in caffeine, which is a stimulant and can cause jitters, heart palpitations or anxiety.

However, if you’re concerned about these side effects, there are mushroom coffee alternatives that contain no caffeine at all. These products typically use organic, shade-grown coffee beans and include a variety of functional mushrooms. Some brands even experiment with different flavors, including peppermint and anise. Some brands also sell mushroom coffee mixes that are vegan, gluten-free and nut-free.
